The Moment Before The Spotlight

For over 50 years, I’ve lived my life on stage as a singer—learning lessons you can’t find anywhere else but in front of an audience.

This blog is where I share those lessons—through music, story, and experience—with the hope that they help you find your voice.

There’s a moment that happens before every performance.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a small room or a packed house…
whether it’s your first time on stage or your thousandth.

That moment is always the same.

You’re standing just out of sight.
The lights are waiting.
The audience is out there.

And for a few seconds… everything goes quiet.

I’ve stood in that moment for over 50 years.

And I can tell you something most people don’t expect:

That feeling never completely goes away.

You would think after all that time, the nerves would disappear.

They don’t.

But they do change.

In the beginning, it feels like fear.

Your heart races.
Your thoughts get loud.
You start wondering if you’re ready… or good enough… or if you’ll get it right.

But over time, you start to understand something.

That feeling isn’t there to stop you.

It’s there to remind you that what you’re about to do matters.

Because stepping into the spotlight—whether on a stage, in a conversation, or in life—means you’re choosing to be seen.

And that takes courage.

I’ve learned that courage doesn’t look the way we think it does.

It’s not loud.
It’s not always confident.

Most of the time…

it’s quiet.

It’s that small voice that says:

“Go anyway.”

Over the years, I’ve seen people hold back in that moment.

Not because they didn’t have something to offer…
but because they weren’t sure they were ready.

Let me tell you something I’ve learned standing in the wings:

You’re never going to feel completely ready.

The people who step forward aren’t the ones without fear.

They’re the ones who decide that what they have to say…
what they have to share…

is more important than the fear.

And once you take that step—once you move into the light—something shifts.

You connect.
You communicate.
You become part of something bigger than yourself.

That’s true on stage.

And it’s true in life.

We all have moments where we’re standing just outside the spotlight.

Waiting.
Thinking.
Hesitating.

The question is:

Will you step forward?

Because everything can change in that one moment.

Keep finding your voice.
